2019 Theme: Ocean Opportunities
Riding the Waves of Change: Team Madagascar's Mission to Preserve Our Oceans!
Each year, our oceans bear the brunt of human activities, enduring the onslaught of millions of tons of pollutants. This relentless assault poses a grave threat to marine life and our global community. Shockingly, it is estimated that the equivalent of a truckload of plastic pollution enters the ocean every minute! It's high time we shine a spotlight on this critical issue, educate ourselves, and take decisive action to safeguard our oceans and the magnificent wildlife that inhabit them.
The Third Edition:
Enter the stage of the Third Edition of the FIRST Global Challenge, where teams from across the globe converged at Dubai's Festival City Arena. Our mission? Embrace the inspiring theme of "Ocean Opportunities" and tackle real-world challenges tied to cleaning up our precious oceans. We were not simply competitors; we were determined change-makers. Inspired by the tagline "United by land, connected by oceans," we recognized the power of unity in addressing the global challenges we face.
The Game: Ocean Opportunities:
In Ocean Opportunities, the high-stakes showdown commenced as two alliances, each comprising three teams representing different nations, set out to clear the ocean of pollutants. Our Cleanup Crews had two minutes and thirty seconds to navigate the waters, deploying their ingenious robot collectors. They swiftly collected pollutants, transporting them to designated processing areas before finally retrieving their collectors from the ocean depths.
The Challenge:
Before the battle began, the playing field was strewn with pollutants, creating an exhilarating scavenger hunt for environmental heroes like us. The ocean's surface shimmered with thirty micro pollutants and fifty macro pollutants—tiny and large foam balls representing the pollutants we sought to eliminate. Our mission was clear: gather them all, score points, and restore the ocean's pristine beauty.
Processing Areas:
To achieve our goals, we had two types of processing areas at our disposal: the processing barge and the reduction processing hub. With every successful transfer of pollutants to these areas, we not only rid the ocean of harmful substances but also garnered valuable points. It was a win-win situation for Team Madagascar and our precious planet.
